Madeira Negra is the interiors studio of Fábrica do Sofá: it designs the space, produces the joinery and the furniture in Freamunde and installs with its own teams. One point of contact from concept to turnkey handover, in private homes and corporate spaces in Porto, northern Portugal and abroad.

The service

The people who draw it are the people who build it.

Most interior projects run through a studio that draws and suppliers who execute. Here the two sit in the same company: the technical drawing that leaves the studio goes straight into the joinery unit and the upholstery line of the 5,000 m² factory in Freamunde. That shortens lead times, removes the blame game when something drifts, and keeps the budget in view.

We work with private clients, interior designers and architects, either on the complete project or on the production of joinery and furniture drawn by someone else. Either way we measure on site before anything is made — the difference between a wardrobe that fits to the millimetre and one that ends in a hurried scribe.

How we work

Four stages, concept to installation.

The route is the same whether it is a flat in central Porto or an entire villa. Only the scale changes.

Concept and site survey
We start in the space itself: how you live or work in it, measured on site, and we agree the concept, the level of finish and the target budget with you. Nothing is bought or specified before that.
Photorealistic 3D visualisation
Before work starts on site, the project is rendered in Corona and V-Ray. You see the result as it will be: the materials, the light and the proportions, signed off to the millimetre. This is the stage where changing your mind is free — swapping a lacquer or the width of a panel in a render costs nothing; in a wardrobe already built, it does not.
Production in our own factory
Once the project is approved, joinery and furniture go into production in Freamunde, in the same factory that makes the sofas: CNC cutting for the precision, hand finishing for the detail.
Installation and site management
We coordinate the trades on site through to turnkey handover. Because everything leaves the same factory, the pieces arrive tuned to one another.

What we produce

Joinery, upholstery and furniture under one roof.

A project with us can be the joinery alone or the complete interior. These are the elements we manufacture ourselves, without going out to third parties:

Wardrobes, walk-in closets and storage systems in beech, oak and walnut.
Kitchens, islands, media walls, libraries and wall panelling.
Sofas, armchairs, benches and headboards drawn for the space.
Chairs and contract furniture for reception and shared areas.
Doors, trims and one-off pieces designed from scratch for the project.

The palette comes out of the projects we have already delivered: grey oak with vertical metal pulls in Luxembourg; white-veined black marble and curved lacquered doors in Paris; slatted walnut and a smoked-glass closet framed in black metal in Matosinhos; oak and hidden LED coves in a flat in central Porto. We work solid and veneered timber, lacquer, metal, glass and stone — and every junction is settled in the render, before anything goes into production.

Where we work

From Porto to Paris and Luxembourg.

Our base is northern Portugal: Porto, Matosinhos, Maia and Guimarães are all less than an hour from the factory, which keeps surveys and site visits simple. Beyond Portugal we have delivered residential projects in Paris and Luxembourg, with the pieces leaving Freamunde and our own teams installing at destination. Exporting is routine here: 12 markets and more than 200 turnkey projects.
