Fábrica do Sofá
Living room with a made-to-measure sofa, chaise longue and armchair installed in a client's home

Made-to-measure furniture · EBBA Sofa & Madeira Negra

Made-to-measure furniture, drawn and built in northern Portugal.

Sofas, beds, armchairs, benches, dining chairs and joinery. We have been making furniture to order in Freamunde, near Porto, since 1999, in a 5,000 m² factory where CNC cutting, sewing and hand upholstery all sit under one roof. Choose the model, the dimensions, the fabric and the wood — we build it and deliver in six to ten weeks.

What we make

Two brands, one factory floor.

Our furniture comes from two in-house brands that share the same building: EBBA Sofa handles the upholstery — sofas, beds, armchairs, benches and chairs — and Madeira Negra the joinery in beech, oak and walnut. Keeping both under one roof means nothing is subcontracted, and one team stays answerable for the lead time and for the finish.

There is no price list and no fixed catalogue. Every piece is quoted in detail from the dimensions of the room, the filling suited to its daily use and the material you choose. We make the single sofa for a flat in Porto and runs of several hundred units for hotel groups and for international brands that put their own label on our work.

Product families

Five families, every piece made to order.

The EBBA Sofa collections are organised into five families. Each model is a starting point: we keep the design and adjust widths, depths, seat heights, fillings and covering to suit your project.

  • Sofas

Models: Dune · Alder · Verona · Arcadia · Verve

Fixed sofas, corner sofas and chaises, from Dune and Alder to Verona, Arcadia and Verve. The frame is CNC-cut to tolerances under 0.5 mm and then covered by hand, one piece at a time: that is where the tension of the leather, the pleating of the velvet and the corner of a cushion are settled. Choose fabrics from group 2 to 7, Leather 2/3 hides, or send your own material as COM. Five-year guarantee on the frame and the upholstery work.

  • Beds

Models: Vesper · Elysian · Vantage · Belmont · Castade

Beds, upholstered headboards and bases, from Vesper and Elysian to Vantage, Belmont and Castade. The headboard is where a bedroom finds its character — buttoned, fluted, or plain with a visible seam, made to the exact width of the wall and to a height that works with your bedside table. We build the same typology for hospitality, in runs that fit out whole floors, with Martindale 40,000+ fabrics and BS 5852 flame-retardant foams.

  • Benches

Models: Serena · Elara · Camila · Adeline · Aurora

Benches, stools and end-of-bed seating — Serena, Elara, Camila, Adeline and Aurora. These are the pieces that resolve how a space is used: the hallway, the foot of the bed, a kitchen island, the waiting area of a lobby. They pair EBBA Sofa upholstery with solid wood bases built by Madeira Negra in beech, oak or walnut, and are often drawn from scratch to match a sofa already made for the same project.

  • Armchairs

Models: Zephyr · Windsor · Flux · Circa · Celestia

Single armchairs: Zephyr, Windsor, Flux, Circa and Celestia, from classical references to contemporary lines. Being small pieces, they are the safest place to try a more expressive material — bouclé, velvet, leather — without committing the whole room. We adjust seat height and rake to whoever will use the chair, which matters in a reading chair or a hotel bedroom. Samples go out before you decide.

  • Dining Chairs

Models: Julian · Evelyn · Elise · Clara · Aria

Upholstered dining chairs — Julian, Evelyn, Elise, Clara and Aria — with beech, oak or walnut frames and seats built for daily use. At home this is the typology that takes the most punishment, so filling and fabric are chosen for years of meals rather than for a photograph. For restaurants and hotels we build the same chairs with Martindale 40,000+ fabrics and BS 5852 foams, with spec sheets ready for tender documents.

Materials and process

Cut to 0.5 mm, finished by hand.

Panels, timber profiles and frames are cut on numerically controlled machinery, to tolerances under 0.5 mm, before they ever reach the bench. From there the work is manual: sewing, filling, covering and final adjustment by upholsterers and machinists with decades at the bench. Quality control is documented photographically at every stage, so you can follow your piece being built.

The material card covers fabrics from group 2 to 7, Leather 2/3 hides and beech, oak and walnut, and we accept COM/COL when the fabric or leather is already specified by the design practice. Samples go to any address in Portugal and Spain with no obligation, and sample boxes travel to international clients. Our Soft Life and Ecoluxe lines use certified foams, recycled textiles and responsibly sourced wood.

Lead times

Six to ten weeks, drawing to room.

A made-to-measure project starts with a conversation — at the Carvalhosa showroom or on a video call — and a written brief: typology, room dimensions, daily use and deadline. Then comes the proposal with technical drawings and a production calendar, samples in your hands and, once approved, six to ten weeks of manufacturing. We ship with specialist logistics and assemble on site, in Portugal or in any of the 12 markets we export to.

See it in person

Sit on the pieces before you decide.

The showroom is inside the Domóvel shopping centre in Carvalhosa, Paços de Ferreira: Mon–Fri 9:00–18:30 and Sat 10:00–13:00. If you would rather see how the pieces are made, guided visits to the Freamunde factory are arranged by appointment.
